Maintenance and upkeep of deionized water equipment is essential, especially the maintenance of consumables, which requires timely cleaning and replacement. Deionized water equipment has several stages of filtration, and the purification efficiency of the previous stage directly affects the water quality of the later stage. Failure to maintain the equipment can increase the operating costs.
1. Sand filter:
The main ingredient in quartz sand is 99% silicon dioxide. Its filtration function mainly relies on the filter layer interception, and the filter material will not be damaged during use.
Replacement period: Usually, water treatment companies require replacement once a year.
Our recommendation: Replacement is not necessary. Simply clean and add some every year.
2. Activated carbon filter:
The activated carbon filter material mainly relies on the microporous adsorption of the filter material. Therefore, the filter material needs to be replaced after a period of use.
Replacement period: Usually replaced once a year.
Our recommendation: Replacing according to time is not accurate because the usage program and frequency are different. If filtering tap water, we recommend using a residual chlorine indicator to test whether there is residual chlorine in the water. If there is, it is recommended to replace it immediately.
3. Ion exchange resin:
The main function is to remove the hardness in the water and requires industrial salt to regenerate the resin.
Replacement period: 2-3 years.
4. Security filter
Mainly a 5-micron or 1-micron PP cotton filter.
Replacement period: 2-3 months.
5. RO reverse osmosis membrane:
The main function is to remove 99% of the ion impurities in the water.
Replacement period: 1-2 years for most areas’ water quality or water sources.
Our recommendation: We suggest replacing it according to the water quality of the output. For example, if the membrane is clogged, the water output is insufficient, or the membrane is ruptured, causing impurities to pass through the membrane, and the water quality does not meet the standards, it is recommended to replace it once.
At the same time, with professional management and using an 8-inch membrane, its performance can be partially restored through chemical cleaning. If it is a small membrane, we recommend using cleaning instead, as the cost of labor and chemicals is not cost-effective.
6. Mixed bed anion-cation resin
Mainly used to remove the remaining 1% ion impurities in the water.
Replacement period: 2-3 years.
Our recommendation: Can be calculated according to your period of water production. The resin quality and efficiency are different. You can judge by calculating the resin consumption rate and the ratio. Of course, this requires professional personnel. Generally, large-scale systems, such as those producing more than 20 tons of water per hour, use professional personnel to calculate and provide advice. If it is lower than this number, replacing it every 2-3 years is fine.
7. If it is EDI, the maintenance or replacement of EDI can be determined based on the water quality of the deionized water equipment output. If the water quality is not up to standard or the water output does not meet requirements, the EDI can be maintained or replaced.
Special reminder: For EDI deionization technology, it is essential to test that the activated carbon output water does not contain residual chlorine. Once the activated carbon fails, the EDI has no protection and will be damaged. EDI maintenance and replacement costs are high, so users should be vigilant.
